Activities & Experiences
The Wild Heifer Estate is a working agricultural property, not a tourist construct. Our activities are anchored in real production — olive oil, cork, organic cattle — and our experiences emerge from that authenticity. We invite our guests to participate, to learn, and to slow down.
Centenary Olive Grove
Our 1,033 georeferenced olive trees include some of the oldest still in production in this part of the Alentejo. Trees planted in 1903 stand alongside trees planted in 1953 — a continuous productive grove of remarkable historical depth.
We are working towards full organic certification and the production of a small-volume premium olive oil. For guests, we offer guided olive grove walks, harvest experiences in autumn (October to December), and tastings paired with regional bread, cheese, and wine.
Best season: autumn (harvest), spring (flowering and grove walks).
Cork Oak Woodland and Agroforestry
The silvopastoral management of the montado — cork oak (sobreiro) and holm oak (azinheira) woodland with extensive grazing — is one of the most sustainable landscape models in Europe. Our practices integrate biodiversity conservation, cork harvesting on the strict nine-year cycle, and stewardship of the riparian galleries along the seasonal streams.
Through Natura 2000 payments and conservation contracts with the Portuguese Institute for Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF), we transform regulatory compliance into a positive economic and ecological outcome.
Guests can join guided montado walks, learn about cork harvesting (when in season), observe the rare birds of the steppe, and witness firsthand one of Europe's most distinctive working landscapes.
Best season: spring (birds and flowers), early summer (cork harvest, every 9 years).
Organic Cattle Farming
The estate is integrated into the Monte Ardila group's pastoral network. Charolais-cross cattle in certified organic, extensive grazing, with rotational pasture management and controlled stocking density — the same practices used at our sister property, Bovinos at Herdade Entre as Águas.
The model is one of authentic extensive ranching: cattle live in freedom, without confinement, with individual care and personalised attention, in line with Alentejo tradition. The result is meat of exceptional quality, with full traceability from pasture to plate.
Guests can visit the herd, witness rotational grazing in action, and (on request) join in the daily routines of the ranch.

The Wild Heifer is the natural companion to Active Retirement Europe — the first agricultural senior cohousing community in Europe, located on the neighbouring Herdade Entre as Águas. Active Retirement offers a structured three-phase journey: Experience Stay (1 to 7 nights of full immersion), Extended Stay (1 to 12 months, renewable), and Cooperative Member (indefinite, transmissible use rights).
For prospective members, The Wild Heifer offers a refined alternative for the first encounter with the territory and the community. For established members, it offers a private retreat for guests, family visits, or simply a change of scene without leaving the Vale do Guadiana.
Our programme includes guided estate walks, birdwatching, olive grove visits, traditional Alentejo cooking workshops, and cante alentejano evenings — all in close coordination with the Active Retirement community.
